16 Valentine's Day nails, from signature reds to classy heart design

Heart nail designs

No shape or symbol is as apt for celebrating Valentine's Day as a red love heart, and when done well, the effect can be both stylish and downright adorable. And for those looking to do their heart nail designs at home, Sophie Louise Martin has shared exactly how to do so in three easy steps - which can be applied to all of the heart designs below.

"A favorite design amongst all nail techs is the scattered heart design," says Sophie Louise Martin, which consists of micro love hearts painted onto each nail. "Not only does it look great but it's also relatively easy to recreate at home," she adds. Here's how:

  • Step 1: Apply base polish. "My favorite way to wear this design is with a classic nude base," says Sophie.
  • Step 2: Get dotting. "Take a small dotting tool and dab it into your chosen nail polish (red or gold looks great). Next, place two small dots onto the nail positioned next to each other."
  • Step 3: Join the dots. "Grab a fine line brush and start to drag the two dots diagonally down until they meet at a point. You'll then need to fill in any gaps and voila, there's your love heart."

There are so many ways to mix up a classic French manicure. One of our favourites is opting for a colourful tip like this deep wine shade. If you're attempting this at home, start by painting your base colour before drawing a curved line, using a thin brush, along the smile line, and filling in the tip.

15. Almond red French tips

If you have longer nails, almond-shaped French tips offer classic elegance no matter the occasion but look especially expensive with a lick of statement red. To recreate, we recommend investing in a French nail stamper, which will help you achieve uniform crescent-shaped lines.

With spring fast approaching, a pastel pink French nail look doubles as both a gorgeous (but understated) Valentine's Day look and a soft, everyday mani for when the warmer weather hits.

As an expert in nail art and manicures, I can assure you that Valentine's Day nails are a fabulous way to embrace the most romantic time of the year. With a wide range of options, from sophisticated solid shades to stylish nail art, there is something for everyone to elevate their standard manicure for February 14th.

According to expert manicurist Sophie Louise Martin, Valentine's Day nail designs don't have to be over the top. A simple solid shade of pink or red can be the perfect nod to the occasion, or for those feeling adventurous, there are plenty of nail art designs to try out. The key is to find a design that suits your style and preferences.

For those looking for simple Valentine's Day nails that will remain wearable and in line with the 2024 nail trends, there are 16 manicures that are sure to steal your heart. Let's explore some of the concepts used in these nail designs:

  1. Heart nail designs: A red love heart is an apt symbol for celebrating Valentine's Day. When done well, it can be both stylish and adorable. One popular design is the scattered heart design, where micro love hearts are painted onto each nail. This design is relatively easy to recreate at home. Start by applying a base polish, such as a classic nude shade. Then, use a small dotting tool to dab your chosen nail polish (red or gold) onto the nail, placing two small dots next to each other. Next, use a fine line brush to drag the two dots diagonally down until they meet at a point, creating the love heart shape.

  2. Subtle heart accents: This minimalistic look features micro red hearts painted onto a fresh, barely-there base. You can choose to cover every nail with a red decal or opt for just one solitary heart on each thumb or wedding finger.

  3. Negative heart nails: For a modern twist on heart nails, go for negative space nails. Select the nail or nails where you want to feature the heart design, and either paint the shape with a detailing brush or use a stencil.

  4. Luxe love hearts: Take the classic love heart Valentine's Day nail art to a more luxurious level by asking your manicurist for gold foil hearts on top of a milky sheer base. Oval and squoval nail shapes suit this design best.

  5. Red heart tips: This flirty take on the classic French manicure features beautiful red love heart tips. For the best results, ask a professional manicurist to file your nails into an oval or pointed shape that will act as the 'V' shape of the heart.

In addition to heart designs, red nails are a timeless and romantic choice for Valentine's Day. A classic red manicure looks great at any time of the year and is particularly appropriate for the occasion. It's also one of the biggest nail trends in 2024, so you'll be on-theme and on-trend. Consider shades like Nailberry L'Oxygéné Oxygenated Nail Lacquer in "Cherry Cherie," Essie Original Nail Polish in "Bordeaux," or OPI Classic Nail Polish in "Rebel With A Cause."

Other concepts used in Valentine's Day nail designs include abstract art, half moons, glitter accents, burgundy nails, cherry red blocks, ombré and gradient pink nails, jelly pink nails, and French tip nails with a touch of red or pink.

Whether you prefer a classic or more adventurous nail design, there are endless possibilities to express your style and celebrate Valentine's Day. So go ahead and indulge in some fabulous Valentine's Day nails that will steal your heart and remain wearable long after the romantic holiday has passed.
