The Rain season 3: Everything you need to know (2024)

Note: contains major spoilers for The Rain.

It didn't take long after the premiere of season two for fans of The Rain, Netflix's Danish post-apocalyptic drama, to question whether or not there was going to be a third season.

It takes Netflix roughly one month to decide the fate of its shows and the future of Denmark's popular export was no exception.

Soon after season two dropped, the streaming giant confirmed that a third and final season is on its way, so grab your brolly and join us here at Digital Spy as we share everything you need to know about The Rain season three.

The Rain season 3 cast: Who's returning?

The majority of the main players managed to survive the obstacles thrown at them in season two, so we would expect the following to all feature: Rasmus (Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen), Simone (Alba August), Martin (Mikkel Følsgaard), Patrick (Lukas Løkken), Jean (Sonny Lindberg), Fie (Natalie Madueño), Kira (Evin Ahmad) and Sten (Johannes Bah Kuhnke).

For a moment, it looked like we'd lost Sarah (Clara Rosager) after she was shot by one of the soldiers and appeared to die. But she returned from the dead, with one notable difference: she now has Rasmus's virus.

But Lea (Jessica Dinnage) will not be back after she sacrificed her own life to help save Simone, and Rasmus and Simone's father Frederik was also shot dead by Kira, so don't expect to see him again either.

The Rain season 3 release date: When will it air?

Both seasons one and two were released during the month of May, so we'd also expect a May 2020 premiere for the final chapter, just missing out on those April showers.

While the first season ran for eight episodes, the show's second instalment was reduced to just six, so it's unclear how many episodes will be filmed for the upcoming third season of The Rain.

The Rain season 3 plot: What will happen?

During an interview with NME last year, show runners Jannik Tai Mosholt and Christian Potalivo revealed how much real-life fears surrounding climate change influence their work on the show:

"Everyday the news gets worse and it feels like we're getting closer to when something like this might actually happen," said Mosholt.

"We had a journalist from Cape Town telling us there's no water there now and we live in Denmark where it seems to rain more and more and we don't have the snow that we used to. So we can feel [the effects of climate change] starting to happen already."

Given that season three will be the final instalment of The Rain, expect to see these fears play out to more extreme measures than ever before on the show.

Now that Rasmus has been captured, season three will likely focus on how his allies plan to rescue him, and what Apollon wants with him.

Sten explained that they never wanted to cure Rasmus, but to become just like him: "We can adapt to [the virus], make it part of us... We won't cure him, we'll cure us."

There's also the fact that Simone tried to kill her own brother, which is going to be an extremely awkward conversation when they next come face to face, and let's not forget that Sarah (Clara Rosager) has been infected by the virus now too, which is definitely something that the next season needs to address.

Then there's Kira, who has been working undercover at Apollon. There are big question marks hanging over her and what her endgame is, not to mention the "Fallout Gun" and other electromagnetic items that Patrick's stumbled across. Were the group trying to use that gear to draw out the capsules?

Not only will season three need to address each of these cliffhangers, but it will also need to bring every loose end from the show's entire run to a close. Will humanity succumb to the virus completely or can it be stopped once and for all?

After season one first aired, co-creator Christian Potalivo told Indiewire: "We have all the answers; we haven't just given all of them yet... There's quite a good explanation on how the disease was used and why it was used the way it's been done in season one."

Let's just hope the final season of The Rain addresses all of these issues and brings us the answers we need.

The Rain season 3 trailer: When can I watch it?

It's far too early for a brand new trailer just yet, but expect new footage to drop down on us around spring 2020. In the meantime, keep tabs on this page for all of your Rain updates.
