Why Do I Make Homemade Salad Dressing?

Why do I make my own salad dressing? Honestly, homemade dressings just take minutes to make and they taste so much better. And despite the claims of some popular salad dressing manufacturers, there are still plenty of additives and highly processed ingredients in most dressings.

In fact, Kraft just started airing this commercial where they tell usto “assume nothing” when it comes to bottled salad dressings and then they goon to say:

Unlike someother guys these Kraft dressings have no artificial flavors, no synthetic colors. No wonder it tastes so good.

What’s the catch? This claim is only true for 3 varieties of Kraft dressing: Classic Caesar, Zesty Italian, and Classic Ranch. Unfortunately Kraft is right—you should “assume nothing” when it comes to most big food company commercials!

Andwhen I visited my local grocery store this morning what did I find in Kraft’s Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing? Here’s the ingredient list:

Although there aren’t any artificial colors added, there are still plentyof added sugars (grape juice and sugar), highly processed oils, gums and stabilizers that are increasingly linked to digestive issues, and flavor additives like potassium sorbate and calcium disodium EDTA.

My Recommendation When It Comes to Salad Dressings

So what’s my recommendation? If you’re looking to clean up your diet, I still thinkmixing up your own salad dressing is the best choice, and it only takes a few minutes to make! What do you think?

Ingredients

Scale

  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise or plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon prepared Dijon mustard
  • 3/4 teaspoons maple syrup or honey (optional)
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Blend together the oil, vinegar, mayonnaise/yogurt, garlic, mustard, and maple syrup/honey until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Notes

We recommend using organic ingredients when possible.

If looking for a thinner dressing or trying to reduce calories, add 1-2 tablespoons of water before blending.

  1. This dressing is SO GOOD! I left out the garlic. Just whisked it in a bowl. It lasted several days. We used it mainly on salad, but then we had a roasted chicken dinner – chicken over lettuce with this dressing. Fantastic!

  2. This was the best salad dressing I have ever tasted!!! I just love balsamic dressings and this one by far is the best! So easy and delicious. Have you ever tried it with low fat mayo?

    1. So glad you enjoyed this salad dressing, Mary. It’s one of my family’s favorites too!

      I don’t use low-fat or fat-free mayo since it tends to have lots of additives in it. I either make my own mayo or use a high-quality mayo with no additives that also uses healthier oils. Chosen Foods Avocado Oil Mayo is one of my favorites, but it is pretty expensive.

  3. Excellent recipe.. I made it with greek yogurt. Didn’t have to add too much salt at all. Simple to make, almost always have these ingredients. Romaine, cucumber, red onion, and shredded parmesan.

I’ve taken a couple of years away from blogging to work on a big project (launching a new product based on a very popular dog treat recipe from my website). of I store leftovers in the containers I use to make my dressings — which is usually mason jars or shakers like these on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/OXO-Grips-Salad-Dressing-Shaker/dp/B003L0OOR6

      It’s hard to find good quality olive oil and balsamic. I usually buy mine from Costco since I’ve had experience with how they source their products. Costco typically does a very good job of vetting suppliers and upholding high product quality standards.
