Here, I'm going to share my tips for gorgeous lip and eye makeup for women over 60, in order to best define our mature lips and eyes.
I expect that as a woman of a certain age, you’ve been led to believe - either because you read it or someone said it to you - that you shouldn’t wear too much eye makeup, and certainly not a vibrant or a strong lip color because you’ll look age-inappropriate.
Well, I don’t think that’s true.
As we get older, everything tends to fade a little bit. We actually need more help to define our eyes and have our lips looking pretty, which they can do if you choose the right colors. Let me show you how.

Applying lip prime to eyelids
1. Lid prime
The first product we’re going to start with for the eyes is the lid prime. The prime prepares the eyes for the shadow that you’re going to put onto them. Make sure that you let the prime dry because if you try to put any product on top of it right away, it won’t stay on.
Filling in gray eyebrows with a brow brush
2. Brow brush
Our model here has quite faded eyebrows that are the same color as her lovely silvery hair. Unfortunately, her brows no longer frame her face, as they ought to do. A brow brush helps to enhance the brows.
Apply it using light feathery strokes. This works so well because you’re not going to end up with a hard, thick line, which you get from pencil, and you’re not going to get a smudged effect, which you would from using a more powdery product.
Applying eyeshadow
3. Apply eyeshadow
The lid color smoothes out the eyelid and gives a slight hint of color. Here, we've used a very flattering silver shade.
Applying eye pencil to the lash line
4. Eye pencil
As we age, our eyelashes tend to get thin and less lustrous. You can give the illusion of thicker lashes by putting a bit of color along the edge of the lash line. With the eye pencil, you want to draw a line as close as you can to the eyelashes.
Applying dark matte eyeshadow to the socket
5. Apply dark eyeshadow
Eyeshadow is all about giving definition and shape to the eyes. You want to use a darker color to create a socket line that will add depth to the eyes. This will make them look bigger and more open.
Don't use shimmer in the socket because it doesn’t work well with wrinkles or dryness. A matte color enhances the look on your eye.
Applying mascara to lashes
6. Apply mascara
You may want to curl your eyelashes first and then apply the mascara, lifting your eyelashes as you do so. Apply a little bit on the lower lashes as well.
Applying lip liner to older lips
7. Lip Liner
Start your lips by applying some lip prime. This helps to fix lip color and stop feathering. The lip liner should match your natural lip color.
Apply it by putting it on the very edge of your lips using light, feathery strokes - no hard lines. Don’t go over the edge of your lip because that really does look ghastly!
Applying lipstick with a lip brush
8. Lip color
When applying lip color, I recommend using a lip brush This will give you a much more professional finish.
A good tip with lipstick to make it last is to apply one coat, blot it with a tissue, then apply a second coat. That can really make a difference as to how long your lipstick lasts.
When choosing a lipstick, you want one that is a creamy consistency, not something too matte or dry-looking. In terms of color, we’re often terrified of using bright, dark, or vibrant lipstick shades when we’re older.
You can use deeper shades (just think about Helen Mirren and how she looks wearing her wonderful red lipstick), but be wary of things like browns or an eggplant shade, which can deaden your face and make you look older.
Applying a little lip gloss for shine
9. Lip shine
To finish off, add a bit of gloss. Dab it on with the sponge applicator to bring a little bit of shine.

As an expert in makeup for women over 60, I have a deep understanding of the challenges faced when it comes to enhancing mature lips and eyes. Contrary to popular belief, I firmly believe that women of a certain age can wear vibrant eye makeup and strong lip colors without looking age-inappropriate. In fact, as we get older, our features tend to fade, and we need more help in defining our eyes and making our lips look pretty. The key lies in choosing the right colors that complement our mature skin tones.
Let's delve into the concepts used in this article to achieve gorgeous lip and eye makeup for women over 60:
-
Lid Prime: Before applying eyeshadow, it is essential to use a lid primer. The primer prepares the eyelids for the shadow, ensuring that it stays in place. Allow the primer to dry before applying any other products.
-
Brow Brush: Faded eyebrows can be enhanced using a brow brush. With light feathery strokes, the brow brush helps to achieve a natural look without creating a harsh, thick line or a smudged effect.
-
Eyeshadow: Applying a flattering lid color smoothens the eyelids and adds a hint of color. Opt for shades that complement your skin tone, such as a lovely silver shade, which can be very flattering.
-
Eye Pencil: Aging can cause eyelashes to become thin and less lustrous. To create the illusion of thicker lashes, apply an eye pencil along the edge of the lash line. Draw the line as close to the eyelashes as possible.
-
Dark Matte Eyeshadow: Eyeshadow plays a crucial role in defining and shaping the eyes. Use a darker color to create a socket line, adding depth and making the eyes appear bigger and more open. Avoid shimmer in the socket, as it may accentuate wrinkles or dryness. Opt for a matte color for a more enhanced look.
-
Mascara: Curl your eyelashes before applying mascara to give them a lifted appearance. Apply mascara to both upper and lower lashes to achieve a fuller look.
-
Lip Liner: Start by applying lip primer to fix lip color and prevent feathering. Choose a lip liner that matches your natural lip color. Apply it to the edge of your lips with light, feathery strokes, ensuring not to go over the lip's edge.
-
Lip Color: To achieve a professional finish, apply lip color using a lip brush. For long-lasting lipstick, apply one coat, blot it with a tissue, then apply a second coat. Opt for a creamy consistency rather than something too matte or dry-looking. While you can experiment with deeper shades like Helen Mirren's iconic red lipstick, be cautious with browns or eggplant shades that can make you look older.
-
Lip Shine: Add a bit of gloss to your lips to bring a touch of shine. Use the sponge applicator to dab the gloss lightly.
By following these tips, you can achieve a vibrant and vivacious look that adds warmth, color, and definition to your face. Embrace your beauty at any age and experiment with different makeup techniques that enhance your unique features.
